The Big Squeeze

Anytime I register a patient who questions whether she needs to have a mammogram every year, I share my mom’s story.  After having a mammogram at age 70, her family doctor told her the “funny area” was probably just fibrocystic tissue, but she could get a second opinion if she wanted.  He did not order further tests for her, even though she had never previously been told in 70 years that she had fibrocystic breast tissue.  Two years later when her tumor was discovered, it was in the exact same … Continue reading

Wonderful People to Help During a Rough Road

I found a lump in my breast on Thanksgiving 2009.  I had just had a baby and we thought maybe it was a clogged milk duct. I went to see my OBGYN, Ann Sullivan for my 6-week post partum check up and she sent me for an ultrasound and mammogram the next day. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 8, 2009. The following week I had several scans done and during that time I had the pleasure to meet my nurse navigator, Chelsea. She sat with me and … Continue reading

Annual Mammography is a Must!

I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal cancer of the breast in 2004. I was 46 years old.  As an x-ray technologist working for Alegent Health, I knew I should probably have a mammogram every year. But I had no family history of breast cancer; I was healthy and busy. I missed having a mammogram for 2 years. I noticed a lump and saw my doctor. He sent me to Alegent Health Lakeside HealthPark, the clinic that was onsite of the almost completed new Lakeside Hospital. I had just … Continue reading

You’re in, you’re out … you’re (hopefully) cancer free

Let’s face it – I don’t think any woman is ever going to place getting a mammogram ahead of going to the spa or relaxing on the beach on her list of the things she wants to do. There is certainly a reason people call it, “the big squeeze” – frankly, it’s not the most comfortable experience. However, new technology and well-trained mammo techs can make all the difference in the world. Check out these two recent videos on digital mammography to better understand what it’s really like: So … … Continue reading

Milestone Birthday and a Mammogram

I’m 40?!!! A milestone birthday celebrated with a big bash. Plus, my first mammogram!  What should I expect? One co-worker told me after her first screening she never went back. She found the experience extremely painful. That was years ago! She’s not alone. Almost a third of women in Nebraska skip their regular exams. Times have changed. Back in the day, technicians used film to capture images of the breasts. Today, they use high tech digital images. My mammography tech at Lakeside Hospital understood my jitters. Michelle Joslen soothed the … Continue reading
